Filipinos are known for their mindfulness about business. Once an opportunity rises, they would not hesitate to take it. Some would even jump across an abyss of uncertainty just to make their business succeed.
With that being said, it comes to no surprise that numerous overseas Filipinos residing in California have decided to start their own businesses! Here are some Filipino-owned businesses in California that deserve all the love and support from their kababayans!
1. Arkipelago Books
Arkipelago Books is one of the only two distributors outside the Philippines that distributes speciality books. Serving as one of the pillars of the Filipino community in San Francisco for over two decades, Arkipelago Books is located inside the Bayanihan Building in the South of Market (SOMA), a 10-block Filipino Culture Heritage District.

The bookstore’s collection contains books and reading materials such as comics, cook books, history books, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, Tagalog language books, contemporary and historical Filipino-American books, and a whole lot more! With all these books in the shelves of Arkipelago, the bookstore has become one of the top distributors of reading materials to libraries and educational institutions.

2. Para Sa’Yo
Want to support Filipino artists, artisans and brands? Meet Para Sa’Yo, an online retail space that highlights the talents and expertise of the Filipino community. One can purchase gift boxes that contain a wide variety of unique products made by Filipinos.

In addition to the gift boxes, Para Sa’Yo also sells tote bags, pins, candles, face masks, and other products proudly Filipino made. As it continues to grow by featuring the talents of Filipinos, it truly shows that it truly is para sa atin.

3. Le Petit Elefant
A stationery shop founded in 2009, Le Petit Elefant offers various products such as stickers, tote bags, greeting cards, rubber stamps, enamel pins, and art prints that are carefully crafted by the shop’s owner, Genevieve Santos. Filipino culture can be seen in some of the products since Santos has stated that her Filipino heritage is a part of the culmination of her works.

Besides creating art for Le Petit Elefant, Santos also illustrates and writes children’s books. Examples of her works are I Yoga You, In My Life, and the Daisy Dream series.

4. Magpie Alchemy
Offering skincare and self care products, Magpie Alchemy started when the owners of the shop wanted to limit their family’s exposure to chemicals and artificial ingredients that can be found in day to day products. They researched and hand-crafted their own soaps with the use of natural resources.

5. Ugat Clothing
If you are into streetwear and knowledgeable about the Philippine’s History, Culture, and Struggle, then Ugat Clothing is definitely for you! It is a San Diego based brand that sells shirts, apparels, art, posters, stickers that pays tribute and represent Filipino culture.
