When browsing songs on your favorite music app on your phone, binge-listening to lyric videos on Youtube, or listening to random songs on the radio; it is more likely that you have had a moment wherein you automatically fall in love with the music that you just heard without knowing who the artist/s is behind the song.

When you are already vibing to the groove of the music, you often think to yourself that the song must be produced by an international artist through big-time production companies. The moment you learn that it is actually made by independent artists from the Philippines is the moment that you are incredibly proud to be a Filipino! With all that being said, here are some independent Filipino bands that will make you feel precisely that!

The Ridleys

The alternative-folk band that tells stories through songs is composed of Benny Manaligod on lead vocals and guitar, Jan De Vera on backup vocals and lead guitar, Joric Canlas on bass, and Bryant Ayes on drums. If one is familiar with the local Filipino gig scene and folk music, it is for sure that they have at least heard of the band.

Songs produced and performed by the band are all written by Benny. Thus the songs are inspired by his personal experiences, may it be through love, longingness, or whatever he feels like writing a song about. Due to that, the band’s listeners feel a connection with their songs since there is a genuine inspiration for creating the song. As of writing, the band has one album on its arsenal, being released in 2019. The album is titled “Reflections on Moonlight & Poetry,” which includes their hit songs “Aphrodite” and “Meaningful Silence,” among others.
