Many Filipinos have migrated to different parts of the country, particularly America, over time. Living in a country where you were not born is one of the most demanding transitions a person will face. For this reason, some organizations aim to help overseas Filipinos live comfortably abroad, including the Filipino American Service Group, Inc.
Filipino American Service Group, Inc., or FASGI, is a Filipino organization based in Los Angeles, California. This neighborhood was founded in 1981 to assist Filipino American World War II veterans.
FASGI served as a safe place for Filipino American World War II veterans, providing them with housing, medical, and humanitarian services. Furthermore, the organization helps them receive the federal benefits promised by the US government.
Furthermore, in May 2016, FASGI broadened its scope and restructured its role to focus more on addressing the unmet needs of Filipino Americans in Southern California.
Currently, their programs include mental health initiatives, naturalization application assistance, legal referrals, arts incubation, business promotion, health and wellness, disaster and emergency preparedness, community and cultural events, and other community and social services.
Park View House, a 22-bed transitional housing for homeless individuals, is one of the organization's programs that has been dubbed the "Hilton of shelters" by residents and "one of the best shelter models" in Los Angeles by funders.
When the pandemic struck, FASGI maintained its programs and delivered virtual webinars to over two million Filipino Americans dealing with stress, loneliness and isolation, anger, anxiety, and depression, as well as emergency preparedness and overall well-being.
Meanwhile, the FASGI Bayanihan Center, the organization's headquarters and main facility, is open to those in need and for collaboration with other Filipino American organizations.
