Filipino filmmakers are known for their diverse and innovative ideas. As a result, Filipino-made films are frequently recognized around the world.

Here are three movies that showcase the experiences of Filipino Americans abroad.

AMERICAN ADOBO

This film, directed by Laurice Guillen and written by Vincent R. Nebrida, depicted the struggles of Tere, Lorna, Mike, Gerry, Raul, and Marissa, a group of friends in America.

Tere is struggling to adjust to being single at the age of 40. Lorna is considering staying in America rather than returning to her husband in Manila. Mike is questioning his career and his unhappy marriage. Gerry is afraid to come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Raul is attempting to mature and grow. Lastly, Marissa is confronted with her partner's infidelity but is too afraid to act.

This movie is best watched with friends and family because it is relatable, lighthearted, and humorous.

THE DEBUT

Gene Cajayon directed and co-wrote this film, which was the first Filipino American film to be released nationally in 2001. It tells the story of the Mercado, a Filipino family.

The protagonist of the film is Ben, a talented artist who wishes to attend the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), but his father prefers that he study pre-med at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Rose is celebrating her 18th birthday, a significant event for a Filipina. And Roland, Rose and Ben's strict father, works hard as a postal worker to provide for his family.

This film depicts a typical Filipino family dealing with conflicts and misunderstandings with each other and other relatives. It is a film that the whole family can enjoy watching while learning and laughing together.

BITTER MELON

Directed and written by H.P Mendoza, Bitter Melon debuted at the 2018 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

Unlike the other two movies in this article, this film depicts the tragic story of Declan’s family.

Declan returns home for the Christmas season when he discovers that his second brother is abusing his wife and kids. Due to his anger, Declan, together with his wife’s brother, decided to kill his brother to stop the abuse in the family.
