“Kabataan ang pag-asa ng Bayan” is a statement made by Dr. Jose Rizal that is still being heard and spoken of up to this day, it is almost as if it is immortalized–and it is immortalized for all the right reasons.
Though today’s Filipino youth are looked at by some people as those who care more about the latest video games, their K-Pop idols, and their crushes rather than the country, it really is not the case. The Filipino youth have long proved that they have a large contribution to today’s society, from being one of the key-players in the toppling of the Marcos dictatorship; down to voicing out concerns regarding social issues on social media sites.
With all that being said, the Filipino youth’s power is more powerful than one may think. This will be especially true for this year’s presidential elections as 56% of votes are considered to be a part of the youth, according to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

With 56% of votes or more specifically 37,015,901 voters to fall under the age bracket to be a member of the youth, the COMELEC says that this statistic is good for the country as it shows to the Filipino people that the youth are the “prime movers” of this year’s elections.
Though some may ask what is so special about the youth’s votes? Why does their vote weigh more than those who do not fall under the said age bracket? One answer is that the youth is the future of this generation. Without today’s youth, there will literally be no Philippines in the future.
The Filipino youth will be deciding not only for their future but also their children’s children’s. The Filipino youth, just like what is said a couple of paragraphs above, have long played a role in the country’s nation-building. Hence, it is no surprise that even COMELEC recognizes the power of their votes.

Due to being the prime movers of this election, a lot of politicians are trying to sway the youth to be in their favor by trying several tricks. Specifically, there are politicians who are on famous social media platforms such as Tiktok doing challenges, posting hugot quotes on Facebook and Twitter, copying the slang that the Filipino youth uses, learning inside jokes, and so much more. With that, it really just goes to show how the Filipino youth’s vote is extremely important for a politician if one wants to win.
This year’s election is a chance for the Filipino youth to prove that they are indeed the hope of this country: by choosing the right leaders that will not steal from public coffers, and will prioritize the welfare of the Filipino people.
