Whenever a Filipino-American accomplishes something to be proud of in the United States of America (USA), Filipinos in the Philippines celebrate the accomplishment as if it is their own. Scenarios such as Erik Spoesltra winning the NBA Championship with Miami Heat, Jessica Sanchez being a runner-up in American Idol, Batista competing in the WWE, and a whole lot more are just some of the scenarios wherein Pinoy Pride is being shouted into the universe.
What Filipinos back home in the Philippines do not realize however, is that they only see the tip of the iceberg. They only see the extravagance, the fame, the money, and not really the path to success. Majority of the Filipinos in the Philippines see the life of Filipino-Americans in the USA as problem-free, but in reality, it is not the case.
Many Filipino-Americans currently residing in the USA also face several problems on their own. Ranging from financial issues, racial inequality, injustice, and racism. While relatives back home in the Philippines are always eager to receive a Balikbayan box from their relatives abroad, Filipino-Americans in the USA are also eager to get home after a tiring and stressful day at work.
Just around last year, there were numerous cases of attacks on Filipino-Americans. This is relative to the surge of anti-Asian sentiments and hate crimes that grew in the USA. Even the elderly were not safe during these stings of attacks as there were several Filipino-American elderly who were beaten for unknown reasons. Some believe that the anti-Asian sentiment grew due to the proliferation of cases of the COVID-19 virus, as Asians are being blamed for the virus since its first case was detected in China.
Filipino-Americans, just like Filipinos in the Philippines, also face uncertainties in their day to day lives. While living in the USA may sound like an ideal way of living in the Philippines, the other side must also be shown in order to provide the whole perspective. One thing is for sure however. Despite Filipino-Americans being thousands of miles away from the Philippines, they still bear the very nature of a Filipino: being palaban.
No matter what type of hardships the world throws at them, they will continue to fight. If injustice is being served against them, they will continue to fight. Without a shadow of a doubt, that is definitely something to be proud of.
