Candies can bring joy to children and others, and it is a useful food to have on hand.We can't change the fact that the food we eat has both benefits and drawbacks for our health. But what if your favorite food or candy would be illegal?
AB 418, proposed by Rep. Jesse Gabriel of Woodland Hills, would prohibit the sale of popular candies such as Skittles, Nerds, and M&M's, as well as processed foods containing chemicals such as red dye no.3, titanium dioxide, potassium bromate, brominated vegetable oil, and propyl paraben. These five chemicals may be hazardous to people's health and cause increased health problems such as cancer and behavioral issues in children, as well as harm to the reproductive and immune systems. Furthermore, it is already prohibited in the European Union. These chemicals are also found in processed foods, where they help them last longer and taste better. If the bill passes, California would be the first state in the nation to ban these said chemicals. KABC-TV News stated that the chemicals that would be banned by the bill AB 418 have either never been independently evaluated or were reviewed decades ago, by the Food and Drug Administration. The chemicals have been allowed to enter the country’s food supply by being labeled a “Generally recognized as safe” chemical. Rep. Jesse Gabriel said that "This bill will correct for a concerning lack of federal oversight and help protect our kids, public health, and the safety of our food supply." In addition, Fox Business reported that the National Confectioners Association (NCA) opposes the bill, claiming that chocolates and candies are as safe as they have been for centuries and that there is no evidence to support banning the ingredients listed in the bill. This serves as an action call to be more careful and have a serious supervision on the food that contains chemicals that can be possibly harmful for the people.
In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid getting ill, keep in mind that it's important to remain cognizant of and knowledgeable about all the foods you consume. Stay safe and aware.
